Volunteer Spotlight: Aaron Rottier

October 19th, 2020 | News

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Madison volunteers are essential to delivering our mission of creating and supporting programs that enhance the health and well-being of children and their families. Without volunteers, like Aaron, we would not be able to do what we do.  We can’t thank him enough for the love and dedication he show us and the families we serve.

How long have you been volunteering and what got you started with RMHC?

I started volunteering with RMHC in January 2015 because I really appreciated the mission of RMHC. I then transitioned to a Night and Weekend Supervisor role in June 2015 through March 2018. I have since been helping out around the House as much as I can while attending Medical School at the University of Wisconsin.

What are some of your favorite volunteer duties you’ve had?

I really loved working at the front desk – checking the families in/out of the House. In particular, I loved bringing the families to the toy room and letting them pick out a toy for themselves and their siblings!

What does volunteering with RMHC mean to you?

I always say RMHC Madison is a “Home away from Home” for the families with children who will be staying at the Madison Hospitals and that is true and is one of our goals, but over the almost six years of working at the House, it has also become a place that feels like “home” to me. I am always refreshed to step back into the House, see familiar faces, and further, see the faces of new families experiencing the House for the first time.

How have you stayed involved during COVID?

During COVID, I have been working to keep the lawn looking as nice as possible! However, with that said, I have not done it alone as there are many other volunteers who I see there more frequently than I – watering the new grass, planting flowers, picking weeds, etc.

A fun fact about yourself.

I actually love cutting the lawn! I go to the hospital/clinic all day nearly every day so I love being at the House, outside, and working to make the lawn look as nice as I can and this task is the perfect break from my “other” life.

What would you say to those interested in volunteering for RMHC?

Three things: 1) WELCOME! 2) We are happy that you are interested in the House and our mission! We look forward to trying to find a way for you to help out. 3) Enjoy the people around you because they are all incredible humans!
