Heart & Soul Winner: Frostwood Farms Kitchen

Harvesting gratitude through comfort food

It has been said that during the darkest storms, you see the true colors of people who say they care for you. At Ronald McDonald House Charities of Madison, what a bountiful kaleidoscope that has been.

The world shuttered abruptly last spring, yet our primary focus was twofold: keeping our doors open and feeding our families. That was a tall order as the RMHC-Madison volunteer base, including integral meal group volunteers, suddenly dissolved for safety measures. Our team reached out to restaurants and caterers with perishable goods, who quickly turned them into frozen meals to see us through the pandemic. Little did we know how long that would be.

One shining star was Frostwood Farms Kitchen. This Middleton-based organization generously came to the rescue, providing abundant pans of comfort food.

The team behind this endeavor are no strangers to the culinary world. Executive Chef Chris Cubberley and Executive Pastry Chef Nancy Christy Heinen have deep roots in the global food scene.

Frostwood Farms Kitchen has its beginnings with St. Isidore Garden. Since 2013, they have partnered with local youth service agencies to hire more than 100 youth, plant more than 15,000 tomato and pepper plants, and donate more than 100,000 pounds of produce to local food pantries.

Their goal is to apply a business model to a social problem, teaching youth how to work, lead, learn, and be held accountable, working as a team to achieve a common goal.

Yet, food isn’t the only course served at this event venue. Frostwood Farms Kitchen provides an innovative opportunity for corporate team building, private cooking parties, luncheons, meetings, receptions…and the list keeps growing.

The reopening of our once robust volunteer meal program is growing but still lags. People are cautious. We have necessary safety restrictions. The world is eager to return, but the way we make and serve food has changed.  Frostwood Farms is leading the way.

Frostwood Farms Kitchen continues to be steadfast in helping to sustain our RMHC families. They even made our holidays sparkle a little earlier with the delivery of more than a hundred homemade cocoa boxes! These delightful gifts are filled with homemade sweet treats and will be delivered weekly through mid-December for volunteers and families. What an abundance of love!

Ronald McDonald House has so many big-hearted individuals and organizations who serve our mission. Some have been with us since before our doors opened more than 28 years ago! Each year we recognize one of those golden apples as our Heart & Soul award winner. Picking just one is a weighty decision, yet the beautiful commitment of Frostwood Farms Kitchen made this year’s choice a unanimous one.

As we celebrate volunteer appreciation this week, we give thanks for the bounty of love and gratitude that bursts from this House. Thank you, Frostwood Farms Kitchen, for reminding us how bountiful and colorful our garden continues to be.
