Volunteer Spotlight: Katie Medema
June 29th, 2018 | Our Impact
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Madison volunteers are essential to delivering our mission of creating and supporting programs that enhance the health and well-being of children and their families. Without volunteers, like Katie, we would not be able to do what we do. This month we are celebrating one of our volutneers approaching hear fifth anniversary… congratulations Katie and thank you for all you do!
- How long have you been volunteering at RMHC-Madison?
Since September 2013 - How did you initially get involved with us?
I find it incredibly important to be involved in the community wherever one is living. Therefore, when I moved to Madison from Illinois it was one of my top priorities to seek out places to volunteer. I found the Ronald McDonald House, and was completely sold on volunteering. From the principles that guide the House, to the wonderful staff, night supervisors, and volunteers, I found the House to be the perfect place to give my time. - What is your favorite thing about volunteering here?
My favorite thing is that I am just one of the many people that a guest will see throughout their stay, and I have the capacity to make a positive impact on them through a simple smile, greeting, or listening ear. - Do you have a favorite memory with RMHC?
I do not necessarily have one particular memory that sticks out, as there are many different things that I will never forget from my time volunteering thus far. But, by far, it always warms my heart to hear a child say that the House is “the best place ever.” - What types of things have you done while volunteering for RMHC-Madison?
I am on the Friday night 6 pm -9 pm shift, so it does vary from the happenings of day shift. A typical night could include room cleaning, giving tours/helping with checkins, taking children to the toyroom, general cleaning/disinfecting, kitchen/dining cleanup, laundry. No week is the same. - Tell us something about you we don’t know.
I went to the National Spelling Bee in 2007. Besides that, I am currently a graduate student at UW for School Social Work. - What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a volunteer?
There is nothing to consider, just make the phone call… being a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House has been a beautiful experience. Your shiftmates become your best friends, the “work” is not difficult, and you may just be the smile a guest needs to see after a difficult day.
